Bookbinding Workshop: Sewn Board Binding

Come and bind your own book at Common Press! In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn the Sewn Board Binding, designed by Gary Frost. This binding includes sewing and board attachment features of the earliest form of the codex; however, the final form has a modern hardcover look. The sewn board binding is characterized by how the covers are attached to a text block with unsupported sewing. The covers are composed of thin card folios sewn with the rest of the text as the book's outermost sections. The spine is wrapped in cloth, hiding the sewing in the final form. Use it as a notebook or sketchbook, a gift, or a model for additional handmade books.

All supplies are provided freely. No prior bookbinding experience is necessary. RSVP is required for this workshop
