Penn Libraries and Sage Publishing Reach Open Access Agreement

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries (Penn Libraries) and Sage Publishing announce a new open access (OA) agreement to expand the availability and dissemination of Penn scholarly research. The multi-year agreement provides Penn researchers with unlimited fee-free OA publishing rights in Sage’s 150+ fully OA journals (gold) and 900+ subscription-based journals with an OA option (hybrid). Penn researchers will also have access to Sage’s collection of journals in the social and behavioral sciences and growing STEM research portfolio.

The publishing agreement covers articles by eligible corresponding Penn authors that have been accepted into Sage’s production system between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2025. It also covers Royal Society of Medicine and Institution of Mechanical Engineers journals published by Sage. This open access publishing opportunity comes at no cost to Penn authors; the cost is covered by the Penn Libraries.

“Opening Penn’s research to the world makes access more equitable and magnifies its reach and impact,” said Brigitte Weinsteiger, Gershwind & Bennett Family Senior Associate Vice Provost for Collections & Scholarly Communications. “Through this new agreement with Sage, the Penn Libraries’ support for Penn’s research goes beyond what it has ever done before, enabling barrier-free access to all.”

Sage is a long-term advocate of open science. “We are delighted to announce this agreement with Penn and provide their researchers with an opportunity to share their work more widely and rapidly,” said Bob Howard, Executive Vice President, Research Editorial, Journals at Sage. “We recognize the importance of increasing transparency and accessibility of scientific research so that it can help inform societies and policymakers worldwide.”

The Sage agreement represents just one of many ways that the Penn Libraries supports open access. “With agreements like this one, the Penn Libraries is leading the way in embracing open-access publishing that will work seamlessly for Penn faculty and graduate students,” said Jerry A. Jacobs, Professor of Sociology.
